Finding new dessert spots in New York is one of my favorite activities. There are 3 types of NYC dessert spots: the classic Magnolia-esque bakeries, the unique sweet shops like Momofuku Milk Bar and Spot Dessert Bar, or the cute little hole-in-the-wall bakeries that don't show up first on your Google search like sugar Sweet sunshine bakery or Petee's Pie Company.
While I thought I was good at scoping out the dessert scene here in the city, turns out I wasn't looking far enough uptown to find one of Manhattan's most classic hidden gems: Buttercup Bake Shop.
Buttercup Bake Shop reminds me of a charming, low-key Magnolia Bakery. The cakes are fluffy and dense, the cupcakes are beautifully decorated, there's banana pudding, personal cheesecakes, and some brownies, cookies and pies. Yes.
Of course there's the classic chocolate and golden vanilla cupcakes with pretty pastel icings, red velvet cupcakes and slices of layer cakes, but I decided to try some of the items I thought were coolest on the menu.
Like every child's dream on crack. Fluffy, sugary, cake crack.
I'm going to be honest and say this is THE best banana pudding I've had in the city. Yes, better than Magnolia.
Chunky Monkey cupcake
Banana nut cake topped with creamy chocolate frosting and chocolate chips. This cupcake is very rich as the cake is dense and the frosting is thick.
Devil Dog cupcake
Chocolate cake with whipped meringue frosting & chocolate drizzle. Kind of like an Oreo.
Cinnamon Bun Cupcake
Cinnamon spice cake topped with a creamy sweet maple frosting. Mmmm lordty.
Cupcake with bananas, pineapple, pecans, and cream cheese frosting. The pineapples and cream cheese frosting make for a specifically delicious combo.
To answer your questions...yes, I did try all of these in one sitting and yes I will tell you where exactly this wonderful bake shop is located. One of the stores is on 2nd Ave between 51st and 52nd street and the other shop is on 33rd and Madison.
Go eat cake!
